OUTCAST stages a tribe of hybridized objects made of cast porcelain, silicone, and glass that are dialectically playful and alien, chaotic and messy, and awkward yet beautiful. This installation incorporates unconventional objects that evoke children’s toys, tools, automotive, plumbing, and medical parts that spill, bulge, and burst. Revealing the rejects and residues of the casting process, OUTCAST engages the metaphors of societal constructs and social hierarchies and invites a dialogue by navigating between the margins of ceramics, sculpture, and otherness.

Manipulatives are a series of toy-like sculptures that are playful and alien, colorful and messy, precarious and awkward. Informed by manipulative objects used to teach mathematical concepts and fidget objects used in play therapy, these chaotic amalgamations depict a mash-up of automotive, plumbing, and medical parts that morph into smooth organic forms.
From the solo exhibition, Dangerous Play at the Robert and Frances Fullerton Art Museum:
Shiny, luscious, candy-coated spills arouse the impulse to touch, wiggle, and taste. Dangerous Play confronts the risk and loss associated with leisure in our increasingly complex world. Triggering nostalgia for the carefree act of play, children are the experts. For the over-informed, inundated, and work obsessed “grown-ups”, play seems to symbolize disorder that needs containment and control. These objects portray the messy reality of play and contemplate its temptation that seems so void in today’s adult experience. Surrendering to this luxury, Dangerous Play attempts to elicit the inherent values of curiosity and delight- a momentary sensation of full engagement, interconnectedness, and vitality.

Somatic Spill depicts the remains of a curious collision of interlocking bulbous forms that wade in deep red puddles. Incorporating porcelain clay, glass, and rubber, Somatic Spill suggests a process that might be found in organic systems or natural world. Like a corporeal spill discovered in a public space, this work suggests circumstantial evidence of an unknown occurrence. Somatic Spill challenges perceptions of beauty and personal boundaries of public display and private spectacle. This interplay between seduction and aversion is like a repulsive beauty that is hard to look at, and at the same time, hard to look away. Employing erotic faculties, these works demand a sensory encounter that engages the viewer on a visceral level.
